Sanita Puspure and Zoe Hyde battle to win bronze at World Rowing Championships

Sanita Puspure and Zoe Hyde fought to the line to win bronze for Ireland in the women's double sculls at the World Rowing Championships on Sunday.

The Irish duo held onto third place from Austria, with Romania taking the gold and the Netherlands claiming silver.

Puspure, 40, is a two-time world champion in the single skulls but teamed up with Hyde after a disappointing performance at the Tokyo Olympics last year.

And the pair are going from strength to strength on the evidence of their bronze-medal winning performance in Racice, Czech Republic.

Puspure said after the race: "It's a new experience for me, a new challenge. I'm enjoying it so far, it's been really, really good. Zoey has a very good head on her for her first year national rowing. I'm very lucky."

She added: "To be honest I wasn't planning to be here this year at all. I just kept training because I couldn't make a decision.

"I was actually really close to training in April and then Giuseppe [De Vita] put us in a boat and it changed. I was excited to go training again."

It is Ireland's fourth medal - and second bronze - of this year's world championships.

Earlier in the day, Phillip Doyle and Konan Pazzaia came out on top in the men's double sculls C final.

The pair finished up ahead Lithuanian pair Armandas Kelmelis and Dovydas Nemeravicius by just under three seconds.

Ireland's Brian Colsh was third in the men's single sculls C final, while Alison Bergin was fifth in the women's singles sculls C category.
