Sanibel, a barrier island along Florida's west coast, is under a mandatory evacuation order as Hurricane Milton approaches. City officials have announced that residents must leave the island by 10 p.m. on Tuesday to ensure their safety.

The evacuation order comes as first responders are expected to discontinue services once severe winds from the hurricane arrive. Those who choose to stay on the island have been advised to email their address and the names of individuals staying with them to city police.

Sanibel Fire Chief Kevin Barbot emphasized the potential risks of staying on the island, stating, 'If you choose to stay on the island, you may be alone without first responder support for an unknown period of time.'

Sanibel, which was previously isolated by Hurricane Ian in 2022, faced significant challenges as the storm destroyed the only access point to Florida's mainland. Now, residents are still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Helene, which struck late last month.

With schools closed in preparation for Hurricane Milton, officials are offering free child care services on Monday to assist families in fortifying their properties and making evacuation plans. The community is urged to prioritize their safety and adhere to the evacuation order to avoid potential risks and ensure their well-being.
