San Jose State Volleyball Faces Cancellations Amid Winning Streak

The San Jose State women’s volleyball team suffered their first loss of the season against Colorado State, ending their quest for a perfect record. The Spartans, who had won nine consecutive games, faced a series of cancellations by their opponents in recent weeks, leaving them with limited playing opportunities.

Boise State, Utah State, and Wyoming were among the four programs that forfeited games against San Jose State, citing unspecified reasons. This trend of cancellations began on September 14 when Southern Utah failed to show up for their match against the Spartans.

Concerns have been raised by political figures from Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah, suggesting that the forfeits were related to safeguarding women’s sports. San Jose State's coach expressed disappointment over the interference of government and politics in college sports, emphasizing the impact on student-athletes.

Returning to action after a week-long break, the Spartans appeared rusty and were defeated by Colorado State in straight sets. Coach Kress acknowledged the challenge of maintaining rhythm after extended periods without competition but commended his team's effort against a prepared opponent.

Despite the disruptions, the Spartans remain focused on their goal of winning volleyball games and supporting each other. The team's unity and resilience have been highlighted as they navigate through the uncertainties of future cancellations.

Mountain West officials declined to comment on the forfeits, while the schools involved reiterated their initial statements announcing the cancellations. San Jose State setter and right-side hitter emphasized the team's commitment to playing for each other despite the challenges they face.

Looking ahead, the Spartans are scheduled to face San Diego State on October 10 in their next match. Coach Kress praised his team's character and unity, expressing admiration for their ability to handle external pressures and remain resilient throughout the disruptions.
