San Diego State drops second game to Pac-12 opponent
San Diego State suffered a brutal 35-7 loss to Utah in Salt Lake City on Saturday. This was a game that the Aztecs will want to immediately forget.
The first quarter did not see any points from either team. San Diego State called two timeouts within the first 10 minutes of the game. San Diego State’s defense bailed out the offense several times in the opening quarter by shutting out the Utes.
It was shaping up to be a close game. Unfortunately for San Diego State, the tide turned in Utah’s favor in a hurry.
In the second quarter, Braxton Burmeister left the game with an apparent eye injury from an eye poke. Backup quarterback Will Haskell came in to replace Burmeister but he eventually left the game. Third-string quarterback Kyle Crum tried to lead San Diego State’s offense.
Utah quarterback Cameron Rising threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Brant Kuithe with 8:59 left in the second quarter. Utah was on the board first, 7-0.
Solomon Enis extended Utah’s lead to 14-0 with more than two minutes left in the first half. San Diego State fumbled the subsequent kickoff and Utah retained possession in the final minutes of the second quarter. The Utes turned San Diego State’s special teams mishap into points with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Rising.
Utah scored 21 points in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 21-0 advantage over San Diego State. San Diego State’s defense held Utah in check for the first quarter but inevitably fell apart in the second quarter.
San Diego State’s offense continued to struggle in the second half. Crum threw an interception less than two minutes into the second half. Utah turned the interception into more points with a rushing touchdown that extended the lead to 28 points, 28-0, with 11:31 left in the third quarter.
Devaughn Vele hauled in his second touchdown catch of the evening at the 7:34 mark in the 3rd quarter. That score put the Utes ahead by 35 points, 35-0.
With 3:56 left in the game, Crum tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass, which gave San Diego State its first score of the game. The Aztecs were down by 28, 35-7.
There will be plenty of questions for San Diego State to answer over the next week. The defense tried to keep the game within reach but the offense failed to help out the defense.
With a 1-2 record, San Diego State will look to get back to a .500 record in Week 4 against Toledo.
