San Carlo closing Castle Street restaurant for refurb after 13 years

San Carlo is to shut its doors in the new year - but only temporarily.

The restaurant, which has been a mainstay on the Liverpool dining scene since 2009, is set to undergo an extensive £3.5million renovation. Announced today, December 15, by the multi-award-winning San Carlo restaurant group, the venue on Castle Street will close its doors on January 2 for approximately 12 weeks.

While the restaurant is closed to the public, the dramatic transformation will take place before it reopens with an entirely new look. The new aesthetic swap the bold black and red interiors for a more modern vibe, with a focus on opulence and sophistication inspired by the stunning surroundings of Italy.

The entire interior of the venue will be ripped out, while the layout will be reconfigured to accommodate a new private dining room. The interior style will be completed with inspirations from grand Milanese villas and gardens, with the colour palette nodding to the coastline of northern Italy.

Bespoke artwork by LA based artist Jessalyn Brooks will adorn the walls to complement the style of the new space. There’ll also be new furnishings that are reminiscent of classic Italian mid-century pieces, according to the site's owners.

Commenting on the project, managing director Marcello Distefano said: "Our Liverpool venue has held a special place within our group and the city has been so good to us over the years - we've built up an incredibly local customer base of city dwellers, tourists, famous faces and sport stars.

The iconic venue first opened in 2009 and went on to become one of the most popular dining destinations in the city. The closure will take place after San Carlo's New Year's Eve closing event, which will feature live acts keeping the party spirit alive and kicking through to the early hours of 2023.

San Carlo will reopen in spring 2023 and will continue to serve a menu that offers a contemporary take on traditional Italian dining. The restaurant can be found at 41 Castle Street, Liverpool, L2 9SH.
