The San Antonio Spurs have confirmed that Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to injuries, as announced on Monday.
Vassell, who missed the Spurs' recent game against the Golden State Warriors, underwent an MRI that revealed a stress reaction in the third metatarsal head of his right foot. The decision was made after careful evaluation by the team's medical staff.
Throughout the season, Vassell showcased significant improvement in his performance, averaging a career-high 19.5 points per game. He played in 68 games, starting in 62 of them, and also contributed 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game. Vassell's shooting percentage of 47.2% marked another career best for the talented player.
Notably, Vassell achieved six 30-point games this season, a notable increase from his previous seasons. His 166 three-pointers made this season rank him among the top three in Spurs history for a single season.
Furthermore, Vassell's on-court chemistry with rookie standout Victor Wembanyama was a highlight of the season. The duo displayed a strong two-man game, with Vassell providing 87 assists to Wembanyama, the second-highest on the team.
On the other hand, Sochan, a 6-foot-9 power forward, sustained a left ankle injury during a game against the New York Knicks. Following consultations with medical experts, it was determined that arthroscopic surgery is the best course of action for his recovery.
Sochan, in his second year with the Spurs, demonstrated significant growth in his game this season. He increased his scoring to 11.6 points per game, along with 6.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Additionally, Sochan substantially improved his three-point shooting, more than doubling his total from his rookie season.
Sochan had been a consistent presence in the Spurs' lineup, playing in the team's first 74 games before being sidelined for the recent matchup against the Warriors.
While the absence of Vassell and Sochan presents a challenge for the Spurs, the team will look to regroup and continue their season with a focus on player development and team cohesion.
