Samsung foldable phone: The Samsung Galaxy Fold officially unveiled at Unpacked event

There have been a few sightings in the wild so far, but the world was given the most comprehensive viewing of the Samsung folding phone at the company's recent Unpacked event.

Named the Galaxy Fold, this is Samsung's big bet on the future of folding phones, with its new smartphone-tablet hybrid.

The device is 4.6-inches when closed, but when you open it up it has a whopping 7.3-inch infinity flex display. Apps will work when closed or when open, and don't forget you can display three apps across the flex screen for the ultimate device for multi-tasking.

Whilst Royole revealed the first folding phone last year with the Flex Pai, Samsung's is going to be the one to beat.

Here's what we know about the new device.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: Release date

That's right, you will actually be able to buy Samsung's folding smartphone this year. The Samsung Galaxy Fold will be available to buy on May 3 in Europe.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: Camera

Given the sheer size of the Samsung folding phone, it makes sense that it has a total of six cameras: three on the back, two when the phone is open (housed in a fairly chunky notch) and one on the front of the phone when it is closed.

Specs wise, the cover camera is a 10-megapixel camera. The rear triple lens includes a 16-megapixel ultra wide lens, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens. This is the same set up as the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+ phones.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: Features

The Samsung folding phone is jampacked with features. The fingerprint scanner is on the side of the phone, so it unlocks easily.

Inside the phone, there's a new next-generation chipset from Samsung, as well as 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage - now that's a lot of power.

The device also has two batteries, one on each side of the phone. These batteries have been engineered so the device can share power from both the sources. This will also enable the phone to offer the reverse wireless charging also seen on the Galaxy S10 range.

Given this combined battery power amounts to 4,380mAH, you will definitely be able to generously share power.

It is quite telling that Samsung hasn't revealed the weight of the device. With two screens, it's likely this thing is going to be fairly heavy, and probably not one you want to carry around in your pocket all day.

That being said, it is an impressive feat of innovation and demonstrates where smartphone design is going.

Folding phones look like they're here to stay.
