Samsung and Google collaborate to bring generative AI to smartphones

Samsung and Google Cloud Join Forces To Bring Generative AI to Samsung Galaxy S24 Series

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud to integrate Google Cloud's generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology into Samsung smartphones. The collaboration between the two tech giants will begin with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, which was unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event in San Jose, California. This strategic partnership makes Samsung the first Google Cloud partner to deploy Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI via the cloud to their smartphone devices.

Janghyun Yoon, Corporate EVP and Head of Software Office of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, 'Google and Samsung have long shared deeply held values around the importance of making technology more helpful and accessible for everyone. We're thrilled that the Galaxy S24 series is the first smartphone equipped with Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI.'

Gemini Pro, deployed on Vertex AI, is a multimodal AI system that can understand and combine different types of information, such as text, code, images, and video. It provides features like summarization across Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard, enhancing user experience. Samsung is leveraging critical Google Cloud features, including security, privacy, and data compliance, to ensure user safety.

Additionally, the Galaxy S24 series will benefit from Imagen 2, Google's advanced text-to-image diffusion technology from Google DeepMind. This technology enables safe and intuitive photo-editing capabilities, enhancing the user's ability to create and customize images within the Gallery application.

As part of the partnership, Samsung is among the first customers to test Gemini Ultra, Google's most capable and largest model for highly complex tasks. Gemini Nano, an on-device model delivered with the Android 14 operating system, is also being utilized for efficient on-device tasks.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, emphasized the potential for generative AI to create meaningful mobile experiences. He stated, 'With Gemini, Samsung's developers can leverage Google Cloud's world-class infrastructure, cutting-edge performance, and flexibility to deliver safe, reliable, and engaging generative AI-powered applications on Samsung smartphone devices.'

Google Cloud's collaboration with Samsung aims to provide enhanced mobile experiences that stimulate connection and communication for millions of users. By leveraging Google Cloud's technology and infrastructure, Samsung is able to deliver innovative AI applications on their smartphone devices, providing users with a seamless and engaging experience.

Google Cloud is recognized for its enterprise-grade solutions, aiding organizations in digitally transforming their businesses. Their technology and tools enable developers to build sustainable solutions, and customers in over 200 countries and territories rely on Google Cloud as a trusted partner to solve critical business problems.

The partnership between Samsung and Google Cloud opens up exciting possibilities for future developments in the smartphone industry. As users eagerly anticipate the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, they can look forward to enhanced AI capabilities and innovative features that will redefine their smartphone experience.
