Fans have hailed Julian Alvarez after he grabbed Manchester City’s equaliser against Liverpool on his debut in the Community Shield.
The attacker - who was signed in January before seeing out the rest of the European season on loan back at River Plate - came on as a second-half substitute and it wasn’t long before he was in amongst the action.
The Argentine pounced on a spilt catch from Reds goalkeeper Adrian to prod home on 70 minutes despite the best efforts of Joel Matip. He was initially flagged offside before a lengthy VAR check overturned the decision to send City fans into a frenzy.

However, it wasn’t to be City’s day as Liverpool earned a 3-1 win thanks to Mohamed Salah's 83rd-minute penalty following Ruben Dias’ handball and Darwin Nunez's stoppage-time debut header. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop City fans from praising Alvarez for his significant impact.
Some on Twitter compared his competitive bow to that of City's all-time leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero, who netted on his debut against Swansea in 2011. Upon scoring, the striker hit the classic horned-handed celebration often used by Aguero.
@chappie1963: Alvarez reminds me of Aguero
@SZ_citd: Alvarez had landed!
@Tam_Corleone_: Same vibes as Swansea match, Sergio came off the bench to score on his debut, great start Juli.
@Callum25911: Some player Alvarez presses like Jesus and is like Aguero what more can we want
