Emmerdale legend Samantha Giles has spoken of the demand she made to the soap’s writers and bosses.
Samantha Giles, 52, first started playing Bernice Blackstock in Emmerdale back in 1998 having stints on-and-off since then. In recent years, her character has been a permanent fixture in the village.
Samantha has discussed the change to the character she made when she made her last return to the soap. “When I first played Bernice in 1998, she was straight-talking. She'd say things and not realise how they sounded,” said Samantha, in an interview with Inside Soap.

“She was more intelligent when I initially played her. When I came back, they started writing her as a bit bitchy.”
Samantha then said she sought to tweak this characteristic. “I thought, 'No, this isn't right', so I introduced a bit of ditziness to try and avoid taking her down that road," Samantha said.
