Sam Walters opens up on Leeds Rhinos frustration as he aims for new deal

Leeds Rhinos forward Sam Walters insists he will let his rugby do the talking as his future remains undecided. The towering prop returned to first-team action during the defeat to Salford Red Devils in a week in which he became free to negotiate deals with rival clubs for next season.

Walters is off-contract at the end of the season and is thought to have opted to enter the open market at this stage, leaving the Rhinos at risk of losing him. The outing against the Reds was only his fourth of the season, and his first for over a month, having instead featured for the reserves and dual-reg partners Bradford Bulls in the time since.

He made 21 tackles and 61 metres in the clash, including two offloads and is hopeful that will be enough to retain his place in the side.

"I've had a good block of training from the last game," he said. "I've been knocking on the door and competing with people in my spot and tried to push Rohan to give him that headache with selection. I think he rewarded me for my work and hopefully, I can stay in the squad and keep improving on performance."

On his spell out of the side, Walters added: "It's frustrating for me. But then I've also got to put the team first. It's a long season so when I'm not playing I'm trying to improve others and trying to compete at that high level. It's a team game at the end of the day but I'm not going to lie, I want to be in the team every week."

And on his future, Walters insisted his focus was on what he can control on the field. "I'm not really going to comment on that at the moment," he added. "I'm just going to let my rugby take care of itself and see where I'm at at the end of the season."
