Sam Tomkins and Kyle Amor disagree on controversial double movement call as Leeds Rhinos suffer

During an action-packed encounter between Leeds Rhinos and Catalans Dragons, there was one particular moment of controversy. Mitchell Pearce's first-half try for the Dragons certainly stood out as a contentious call, with the veteran halfback being awarded a try despite calls for a double movement.

Pearce had gone close to the line but having appeared to be stopped, ended up planting the ball on the try line. The Rhinos were adamant he had grounded the ball illegally via a double movement, with the Catalans man believing it was all part of one singular motion.

Ultimately, the referee agreed with the French outfit despite on-field official Liam Moore sending it up to the screen as a disallowed try. It resulted in a chorus of boos at Headingley after the try was awarded.

Among those who disagreed with the decision was Kyle Amor, who was part of the commentary team for Channel 4 during the contest. The former Rhinos player insisted the try should not have been awarded.

"I'll be honest, I didn't think that was a try," he said. "We thought it was a double movement. I thought the tackle was complete but the video referee must think there is momentum involved.

"For me, I'm sorry, I don't agree with it, I think he's got that one wrong. However it matters not now. He almost pops it back up and promotes the ball. For me, that's not a try, certainly not.

He continued: "His right arm hits the floor. There's a player in Sam Lisone on his legs. He's tackled and promotes the ball, for me, especially with Liam Moore sending it up as a no try."

However, not everyone agreed. Sam Tomkins, the Catalans fullbac, was also part of the broadcast and when asked for his thoughts on the decision, he thought the correct call was made, despite insisting it was a 'very tough' call for the video referee.

"If this had been called a try or no try there would have been arguments both ways. I think the fact Sam Lisone, the guy tackling around the legs, he sorts of pulls him towards the line. Mitch Pearce ends up in the air and plonks it down. If that was given no try, I'd understand."

He continued: "The momentum was always going, it's a lot easier to watch those calls in full speed but when you slow everything down you could pinpoint every single try and say there was something."

After his comments, fellow summariser Danika Priim told Tomkins he should take his Catalans jacket off.
