Sam Smith's 'beautiful' Brianna Ghey tribute during show

Sam Smith has paid tribute to murdered schoolgirl Brianna Ghey on their latest tour.

The singer performed a cover of Des’ree’s I’m Kissing You during their show at The 02 Arena in London on Tuesday, April 18. The 30-year-old songwriter wore a golden diamante headpiece with the 16-year-old girl’s name written on it in capital letters. The tribute took place during act two - Act II: Beauty - of Sam’s Gloria Tour.

Brianna Ghey, a year 11 Birchwood High School pupil, was found dead by members of the public in a Warrington Park. The teenager was discovered on Saturday, February 11, with multiple stab wounds on a path in Culcheth's Linear Park.

On the day of her murder, the teenager, who was described as a "larger-than-life" character, had spoken to her mum and a video was posted to her TikTok account only hours before she was killed.

A trial date for two teenagers - a boy and a girl, both 15 - who are accused of Brianna's murder has been set for July 10 and is estimated to last three weeks. Since Sam’s performance, those in attendance have shared clips online, calling the tribute “beautiful”.

@ShellOConnor88 added: “@samsmith tribute to #BriannaGhey was beautiful last night.”

The Ghey family described Brianna as a "much-loved daughter, granddaughter and baby sister" and thanked her friends for their support in a tribute to her.

They said: "She was a larger-than-life character who would leave a lasting impression on all that met her. Brianna was beautiful, witty and hilarious. Brianna was strong, fearless and one of a kind.

"The loss of her young life has left a massive hole in our family, and we know that the teachers and her friends who were involved in her life will feel the same. We would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support during this extremely difficult time."
