Nicola, who did not want to give their last name, told the ECHO they had got tickets to see Sam Smith as a Christmas present. She went to the show with her husband and overheard people from Liverpool had booked hotels especially for the occasion.
Speaking to the ECHO, Nicola said: “The show was good, the music was good. Everybody seemed to be enjoying it and then they went off stage. We just thought they were going off stage to get changed.
"Then they said ‘sorry folks we’ve got a technical issue. We’re going to put lights on, use rest rooms.’ After 15 minutes the lights were on and everyone was getting drinks. Then they said sorry the show is cancelled we’re really sorry Manchester.
"It’s just disappointing. I heard people saying ‘we’re really disappointed, we’ve come from Liverpool and we’ve paid for a Premier Inn.’”
The singer posted a statement on social media and said they had recently battled a virus and there was "something wrong" with their voice.
Posting on their Instagram stories, they said: "Dearest sailors, I don't know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows.
"Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise at the end. During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong.
"I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won't. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn't finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry x"
