The singer could be seen dimly lit at the centre of the stage for a few minutes until it was announced the performance would not continue. It is understood Sam Smith had performed four songs when the plug was pulled.

Devastated fans quickly took to Twitter to share the news, with @WillDennigan posting "Show at the #aoarena is cancelled. Hope @samsmith is well nonetheless and ready to perform again soon at full health!"

@sdonne23 tweeted: "#samsmith concert cancelled because of a voice issue! What a massive shame! Take care @samsmith you did sound amazing!"

And @RachPayne88 said: "Gutted Sam Smith show has been cancelled after four songs. Truly devastating it was on its way to being an amazing show. #samsmith"

It came after the artist promised fans in Manchester a "surprise" and wrote on their Instagram story "Unholy won't be the last song".
