Sam Smith concert at Manchester's AO Arena suddenly cancelled after lights go off

Sam Smith's concert in Manchester was suddenly cancelled mid way through the performance after the lights went off.

Confused fans took to social media after the arena briefly went dark and the performance appeared to suddenly stop on Wednesday night (May 24).

After some brief uncertainty, it was later confirmed over the tannoy that the performance had been pulled due to 'vocal issues'.

There had initially been speculation of a 'power cut' after the arena seemed to plunge into darkness, with one user writing on Twitter: "Sam Smith concert at MEN arena has had a power cut everybody in darkness."

The giant gold figure of the singer could be seen dimly lit centre stage for a few minutes until it was announced the performance would not continue. It is understood Smith had performed four songs when the plug was pulled.

Devastated fans quickly took to Twitter to share the news, with @WillDennigan posting "Show at the #aoarena is cancelled. Absolute bummer. hope @samsmith is well nonetheless and ready to perform again soon at full health!"

@sdonne23 tweeted: "#samsmith concert cancelled because of a voice issue! What a massive shame! Take care @samsmith you did sound amazing!"

And @RachPayne88 said: "Gutted Sam Smith show has been cancelled after 4 songs. Truly devastating it was on its way to being an amazing show. #samsmith"

Their gig had kicked off with a tease from Sam Smith as they teased a collaboration with Madonna. Fans were excited ahead of the gig according to a tweet they cryptically put out as the show began.

Sam Smith later confirmed in an Instagram post the concert was cancelled due to issues with their vocals. Read here.
