Sam Ricketts backs Leeds United winger Dan James to continue Gareth Bale’s Wales legacy

Sam Ricketts has called on Leeds United’s Dan James to continue Gareth Bale’s Wales legacy. The Real Madrid superstar rolled back the years to score two stunning goals against Austria - and took his nation one step closer to a World Cup playoff place in the process.

The Dragons have not qualified for the World Cup since 1958 and will face either Scotland or Ukraine this summer for a spot in Qatar. Whites’ winger James missed a hatful of chances to kill the game but Wales held on to secure a dramatic victory.

Leeds’ £25million man has had a mixed debut season at Elland Road since arriving from Man. United. However, still just 24-years-old, time is on his side and former Wales defender Ricketts wants James to step up to the plate once the legendary forward retires.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live post-match, he said: “Tonight was Gareth Bale, it generally is Gareth Bale. Sometimes Aaron Ramsey can pop up with a goal.

“Dan James is starting to get his chances, if he starts putting those away. He needs to take over this mantle once Gareth does stop playing. But, right now, while we have Gareth, anything is possible.”
