Business figure Sam Mostyn will replace former Prime Minister Julia Gillard as chair of mental health support organisation, Beyond Blue.

Ms Gillard's term ends at the end of December but she will remain a patron of the organisation, along with Governor-General David Hurley.

Ms Gillard said it had been a privilege to be in the role over the past seven years, particularly during a time of significant change for the country.

"I'm delighted that Sam Mostyn, an impressive leader and formidable advocate across a range of disciplines, will chair Beyond Blue through a new era of innovation, advocacy and social change," Ms Gillard said.

Ms Mostyn is a prominent advocate in many fields including gender equality, sustainability, corporate governance and the not-for-profit sector.

She takes charge as Beyond Blue embarks on a new five-year strategic plan and shifts its focus from reducing stigma to delivering services.

"Digital and other accessible supports and advocacy that addresses the determinants of health will be key focus areas as Beyond Blue works to support more people to get well, stay well and feel better sooner," Ms Mostyn said.
