Sam Maxwell looks set to face Dalton Smith for the British super-lightweight title in April after returning to the ring for the first time in 10 months on Saturday night.
Commonwealth champion Maxwell shut out Shaun Cooper on the undercard of Mauricio Lara’s knockout victory over Leigh Wood at the Motorpoint Arena. Also fighting on the bill was Smith, who made a second successful defence of his crown against Billy Allington, picking up the victory on points
Maxwell was ringside to watch Smith be taken the distance, and when asked afterwards about a fight in Sheffield in April, he said: “It looks like it, it could be.” Before he added: “It is a fight that could be happening, definitely.

"I have paid attention to his career, especially his last few fights, he’s a great operator, but he has got his weaknesses and I think I’m the guy to counter them. I feel like I am coming into my prime.
“Boxing is changing and the older people are lasting now and being world champions. There are definitely some years left in me.”
Reflecting on his return to the ring, Maxwell told IFL TV: “That’s what my coach wanted, he wanted six rounds and we got them in. I felt better and better with each round as well so it was perfect preparation.
“He’s a top operator, Sean, and we got a chance to work on a few things we have been working on in the gym. It is a brilliant performance and I feel I boxed really well.”
