Sam Kerr Breaks Silence On IG After Being Found Not Guilty Of Racially Aggravated Harassment

Matildas captain Sam Kerr has released a statement after a jury found her not guilty on one count of aggravated racial harassment against a London police officer in 2023.

Taking to her Instagram Stories on Wednesday morning local time, the 31-year-old said that she was relieved to “finally put this challenging period behind me”.

“While I apologise for expressing myself poorly on what was a traumatic evening, I have always maintained that I did not intend to insult or harm anyone and i am thankful that the jury unanimously agreed,” the Chelsea star wrote.

Kerr went on to thank her fiancé Kristie Mewis, her family, friends and “all the fans for their love and support, especially those who attended court each day”.

“I am fully focused on getting back on the pitch and look forward to an exciting year ahead for me and my family,” Kerr concluded.

The trial for the Aussie footballer kicked off last week at the Kingston Crown Court where a 12-person jury heard evidence presented against Kerr, with the prosecution arguing that she called two British police officers “fucking stupid and white” after being taken to Twickenham Police Station in 2023.

Kerr had reportedly been on a drunken night out with Mewis. The drama kicked off in a taxi where Kerr reportedly vomited, the back window was kicked out and the driver accused the couple of refusing to pay for the vomit clean up fee. The driver took them to the police station where Kerr was eventually charged with aggravated racial harassment of PC Stephen Lovell.

The charged carried a maximum sentence of $5000 and two years imprisonment.

Kerr was found not guilty for the aggravated racial harassment. However, the judge did warn her that it was “her own behaviour” in the police station that played a part in the court case taking place.

Following the verdict, Kerr gave a thumbs up to her lawyer.

The Metropolitain police have given their own statement following the verdict.

“Our officers perform a challenging job and are often subjected to various forms of abuse as they discharge their duty. We will continue to support all officers involved in this incident,” the statement read, per Fox Sports.

“The matter was fully investigated with evidence presented to the Crown Prosecution Service who made the decision to charge.

“A jury has found Kerr not guilty and we respect their verdict.”
