Sam Howell feels relationship with Eric Bieniemy continues to grow

When the Washington Commanders decided they were going all-in on second-year quarterback Sam Howell in 2023, they knew there’d be growing pains.

And 10 games into the season, there have been growing pains. The first that comes to mind is that Howell has been sacked 47 times. While some will look at sacks and always blame the offensive line, things are never quite that simple.

One of Howell’s problems was a tendency to hold the ball too long, waiting for the big play, which led to more unnecessary sacks.

However, over the last three games, Howell has only been sacked seven times, an average of just over two per game. He was averaging almost six sacks per game in the first seven weeks. And by taking fewer sacks, Howell’s numbers have taken off. He’s passed for 1,034 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

Another reason for Howell’s improvement is his work with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. The pair have grown more comfortable with one another, and the results speak to that comfort level.

Howell was asked about his relationship with Bieniemy and believes the games have helped the pair’s comfort level with one another.

“Obviously, it’s definitely grown as we’ve gone through each and every week, and we’ve obviously learned more about each other as we’ve gone throughout this journey,” Howell said.

“I just think there’s nothing like going through games together and getting that experience, so our relationship’s definitely closer. I don’t think anything’s changed as far as what he feels like if he feels like he can talk to me a different way than he did when we first met, you know? It’s pretty much stayed the same. But I would just say we’ve just grown to know each other better. We’ve grown to get more comfortable with each other, and I would say there is probably more dialogue as far as what I like and what I don’t like. But it definitely has grown.”

In another disappointing season for Washington, Howell’s ascent has been a massive bright spot. It appears the Commanders may have finally found their quarterback.

The problem is new owner Josh Harris is expected to change the coaching staff. While that is much needed, there is some concern about breaking up Bieniemy and Howell. Will Bieniemy have a chance to interview for the head-coaching position if the Commanders replace Ron Rivera?

Washington has seven games remaining on its schedule, beginning this Sunday against the New York Giants. It will be interesting to see how the pair adjust against a team they struggled with only four weeks ago.
