Sam Heughan has shared a very exciting filming update for the seventh season of Outlander.
The Scots actor has played Jamie Fraser in the hit show since 2014, alongside Caitriona Balfe who plays his on screen wife Claire Fraser.
Taking to Twitter to share an exciting filming update, Sam said this week: "End of another block of shooting! Halfway through the season. Some really special moments and epic scenes. Season 7 will be with the wait…! @Outlander_STARZ "
Fans were delighted at the news and took to the replies to share their excitement. "Thanks for the update: it’s comforting to know there’ll be special and epic scenes: you can’t do anything different! #Droughlander is quite hard to manage and with your message the pain fades," said one.
Another tweeted: "Congrats on being halfway through S7 - the marathon one. A wife to rescue, a revolution to survive plus everything else, bet you’ve got your hands full. It’ll be awesome, Sam, no doubt about it, thanks!" While a third penned: "
Despite Droughtlander being in full swing at the moment, fans can rest easy knowing the next instalment of the historical fantasy series will consist of 16 episodes.
“We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser’s Ridge,” said showrunner Matthew B. Roberts. “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible. Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season seven with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”
Season 7 is going to be based on Diana Gabaldon's book, Echo in the Bone, and likely won't wrap filming until Spring 2023. Speaking to Esquire magazine, Sam, 42, confirmed that though it only feels like yesterday they began filming it won't be complete for some time.
He said: “This season is going to take a while, it’s an 18-episode bumper mega season, so we probably won’t be finished until March or February of next year." Starz have yet to confirm this though and in the Esquire interview, even Sam himself admitted he didn't know.
Rumours are circulating that this could be the finale season of the show, as it hasn't been renewed for another by network Starz but nothing has been confirmed. Diana Gabaldon weighed in on the rumours on Twitter, writing: "Don't pay attention to stupid click-bait online, is my advice. Of course Season 7 _might_ be the last--it may well NOT be the last. Nobody knows that. But people keep pestering, so they get non-answers like, 'Maybe' and add silly headlines."
