Sam Heughan celebrates Sassenach Whisky award win and announces autumn release date

Outlander and Men in Kilts star Sam Heughan is celebrating another award win for his hugely popular Sassenach whisky. It's just won double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) for the third year running.

The Scots actor first announced the whisky in 2019, before launching it in the US in March 2020, and since then its won multiple awards including this most recent win. The chuffed actor took to Twitter to share the news.

He posted a clip of him raising the bottle, adding: "Proud to share that the Sassenach Spirit was awarded Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition!"

As well as the name being a nod to Outlander – Sassenach is the affectionate name his character Jamie Fraser calls love interest Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) in the show – the Dumfries-born actor has also used the unicorn, the national animal of Scotland, for his logo.

Since 2000, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition has become one of the most influential competitions around. The judges use a blind tasting process and receive entries from all over the world with the Double Gold the highest medal available.

The popular whisky, which is produced by Loch Lomond whiskies, is described by Sam as being "rich, distinct, sweet and smooth", making it as approachable and appealing as possible to a wide range of whisky fans.

The star revealed that the next batch of whisky will be arriving in Canada and the US in autumn this year. He also confirmed that it is still available to buy in the UK once again via Master of Malt.
