Sam Heughan appears in trailer for gritty new Channel 4 drama

Details of Sam Heughan's character in Suspect are still under wraps

SCOTTISH star Sam Heughan will star in a new mini-series alongside acclaimed actor James Nesbitt.

The Channel Four crime drama, Suspect, will have Heughan acting in two of its eight episodes as the character Ryan.

The show revolves around Nesbitt’s character, a detective named Danny Frater, discovering that his daughter Christina is dead and pursuing the truth about her alleged suicide.

The programme is an adaption of the Danish series FORHØRET which premiered in 2019 and will conclude later this year.

Not much has been revealed about Heughan’s character but he is present within the trailer as he is heard saying: "Don't go sticking your nose into things that are best left well alone."

He has an English accent in this role, foregoing his native Scottish one.

Heughan is most well known for starring in the hit time-travel period drama Outlander, as highland warrior Jamie Fraser.

One of the primary characters in the series, Jamie is the love interest to Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a nurse who travels back in time from 1945 to 1743.

The role has landed him a People’s Choice Award for Favourite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor in 2017 and a Saturn Award for Best Actor on a Television Series in 2019.

His acting in Outlander has also resulted in nominations for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series at the Critics Choice Super Awards in 2021 and Best Actor (Television) at the Scottish BAFTAs in 2016.

Heughan is a founder of the My Peak Challenge campaign, which promotes health and personal growth and has raised millions of pounds for a variety of causes, including hunger relief, blood cancer research, end-of-life care and environmental protection.

At this year’s gala for My Peak Challenge, the actor sported a Yes badge showing his support for Scottish independence.

He has starred in TV shows such as medical soap Doctors in 2007 and Scottish soap opera River City in 2005.

More recently, he had a starring role alongside Andy Serkis and Ruby Rose in the action thriller SAS: Red Notice as SAS operator Tom Buckingham just last year.

He’s set to star in romantic comedy drama It’s All Coming Back to Me alongside Priyanka Chopra and Celine Dion as well as in the biographical drama Everest as mountaineer and chemist George Finch opposite fellow Scot Ewan McGregor.

Outside of acting, Heughan is also an author with his book Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other, co-written with his Outlander castmate and Scot Graham McTavish, reaching number one on the New York Times' Best Seller List for hardcover nonfiction, and combined print and e-book nonfiction in November 2020.

He is also a successful entrepreneur, launching his award-winning whisky brand, Sassenach, in 2020.

When Suspect will be broadcast is still unknown as Heughan simply tweeted that it was “coming soon” as he shared the trailer on social media.
