Sam Allardyce's advice to Eddie Howe as Newcastle 'switch off' in Tottenham 'embarrassment'

Sam Allardyce has urged Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe to give the squad their 'biggest telling off' yet following their heavy defeat at Tottenham. The former Toon boss fears the squad believe they are 'safe' after watching their second-half collapse in the capital on Sunday.

Fabian Schar had fired the visitors in front, only for Ben Davies to equalise minutes later. Newcastle's solid first-half showing was quickly forgotten however, as Tottenham romped to a 5-1 victory.

The Magpies remain nine points clear of the relegation zone despite a third straight defeat, but the thrashing has been described in some quarters as a reality check following an unbeaten league start to 2022. Allardyce believes Newcastle's January transfer business has 'saved the football club', but has urged Howe to act following the latest loss.

He told talkSPORT via HITC : “They think they are safe. They have switched off. Gone about where are they going to book their holidays now and I think that’s really bad. We are talking about recruitment. The business they have done in January has saved the football club.

“That’s new players coming in, the manager handling them, getting them to play better and going on an unbeaten run. But they switched off against Tottenham. It’s the manager’s job to put them on track and give them the biggest telling off since he has been here. It’s an embarrassment that.”
