Sam Allardyce defends Farhad Moshiri and asks Everton question after Frank Lampard sacking

Former Everton boss Sam Allardyce has defended the club’s owner Farhad Moshiri over the club’s transfer record.

The Blues sacked Frank Lampard as manager on Monday afternoon 48 hours after a 2-0 defeat at West Ham United. It was a result that leaves Everton in 19th place in the Premier League table and only avoiding being bottom due to a superior goal difference than Southampton.

Allardyce spent six months in charge at the Blues during the 2017/18 season, having been brought in to replace Ronald Koeman. The former England manager labelled his time at Goodison Park as "tough" and also spoke about the club's current situation.

“I think that the club’s direction has been up and down like a yo-yo, for years now,” Allardyce told talkSPORT

“Because of the lack of success and the success that the money unfortunately hasn’t brought, because there has been a lot of money spent, then they keep moving managers on.

“The results are not good enough, so the only opportunity to be successful is to try a new manager. I sometimes feel that doesn’t get you anywhere in the end, other than the position you’re in at the minute.

“Of course, I think the money is much tighter than it was before with Financial Fair Play, and the manager has come up against a barrier in terms of trying to make Everton a team that the fans demand and want.

“Then the manager comes under pressure and they move him. I really enjoyed my time, but it was tough.

“It’s been tough for every other manager since at some stage. But what they do now and who they choose now is the most important thing to try and get somebody to get them out of trouble for this year.

“That’s all it is. Building for next season can only happen if someone comes in and gets them out of trouble for this season.

“I think the problem is the lack of goals and, of course, a very leaky defence. You’ve got both ends of the pitch as a coach or a manager that you’re going to have to sort out straight away.”

Allardyce was then asked about Everton’s record in the transfer market. And the 68-year-old defended Moshiri for his part in it.

“I think so,” said Allardyce, when asked if recruitment has been Everton’s biggest problem. “It’s a tough old world out there for finding the quality of player in the Premier League. It’s a worldwide search now, you can’t just go like the old days into the British Isles and Europe. You have to go worldwide to find your players.

“But when you are desperate and panicking to get players in is when you make most mistakes. I don’t think Everton have been in anything other than a panic for the last two or three seasons.”

When asked if Everton have spent well in the transfer market, Allardyce said: “No, I don’t think so. You can look at that and say that they should have spent it better, but Farhad Moshiri is not responsible for spending the money, he’s responsible for providing the money and not spending it.

“What’s happened is the infrastructure at the club in terms of recruitment, unfortunately, has changed as much as us managers have. So stability and good organisation in any business or football club is the answer to success.

“Everybody is to blame at the moment. It’s not just the players or the coaching team. Everybody at the club needs to pull together a lot better, and that’s the word for me. Is everyone pulling in the same direction?

“When the whispers start going around, that doesn’t help anybody and it certainly doesn’t help the club get where it wants to.”
