Salon International de la Lingerie evolves with modern lingerie trends

Salon International de la Lingerie (SIL) reflects the dynamic underwear market.

Over the past 60 years, the world of lingerie has undergone significant changes, reshaping the fashion industry as a whole. Parisian trade fair Salon International de la Lingerie (SIL) has played a key role in reflecting these transformations, serving as one of the few events entirely dedicated to lingerie. This year, as SIL celebrated its milestone anniversary, the event showcased new categories, an expanded selection, and a more diverse range of offerings, capturing the essence of the present day.

Looking back at the history of SIL and the lingerie industry, it becomes evident that the relationship between fashion and lingerie hasn't always been closely intertwined. However, in recent years, this connection has become increasingly apparent. The #MeToo movement, for instance, marked a turning point, highlighting the shift towards women wearing lingerie for themselves rather than for the male gaze. This change in perception has been embraced by most brands in the industry.

Another significant event in SIL's history was its acquisition by WSN Développement in 2023. This takeover brought about a renewed focus on lingerie as a fashion accessory. SIL director Matthieu Pinet, who joined the organization during the #MeToo movement, witnessed this trend permeating the entire show. From established brands to emerging names, the recognition of lingerie as fashion was undeniable.

SIL has always been committed to adapting to the ever-changing demands of consumers. To cater to the evolving landscape, the fair recently introduced a wellness section. This expansion not only provides growth opportunities for SIL but also allows retailers to offer a wider selection of products. The inclusion of wellness products in the lingerie industry is a response to changing consumer preferences, as more individuals prioritize self-care and overall well-being.

The focus on wellness extends beyond external products and is now ingrained in the fabric of lingerie brands themselves. UK label Coco de Mer, for example, has embraced the concept by offering its Pleasure Collection, which promotes female pleasure and self-care. The increasing mainstream acceptance of such products has helped Coco de Mer expand its reach and appeal to a wider consumer base.

SIL has also been a platform for emerging categories within the lingerie market. Menstrual lingerie, led by young, women-led brands, has gained traction. It aims to provide comfort and confidence to women throughout their entire menstrual cycle. These products have faced initial hesitancy but are now gaining acceptance and attracting the interest of both consumers and retailers.

Notably, SIL has seen a growing presence of Asian countries within the lingerie industry. As the market in Asia matures and demand rises, buyers from Japan, Korea, and China have become more visible at the fair. Chinese brands, in particular, have surprised industry insiders with their creativity and energy. This emerging market presents opportunities for global expansion and collaboration.

As SIL continues to adapt and evolve, it remains a vital platform for the lingerie industry. The fair's practical format has proven valuable for buyers, creating a space where the industry can come together under one roof. And despite the challenges faced by the lingerie market, SIL's director, Matthieu Pinet, remains confident in its future. Sustainability is also a key focus, with efforts to align lingerie production with upcoming EU regulations.

Looking ahead, SIL's vision includes larger events in the US and China. Pinet aims to cultivate stronger, impactful shows rather than numerous smaller events worldwide. By understanding the unique needs and preferences of each market, SIL hopes to bridge the gap between fashion and lingerie, catering to diverse audiences around the globe.

Salon International de la Lingerie has played a crucial role in shaping and reflecting the dynamic world of lingerie fashion. From societal movements to changing consumer demands, the fair has remained adaptable and evolved with the industry. As we celebrate SIL's 60-year anniversary, we can appreciate the transformative power of lingerie and its significant impact on the fashion landscape.
