Sir Salman Rushdie’s injuries remain “severe” but his condition is heading “in the right direction” after his stabbing, the author’s agent has said.

The celebrated author, 75, who has faced Islamist death threats for three decades after writing The Satanic Verses, was knifed by an attacker who came out of the audience as he was about to give a lecture in western New York state on Friday.

His literary agent, Andrew Wylie, said: “He’s off the ventilator, so the road to recovery has begun.

“It will be long; the injuries are severe, but his condition is headed in the right direction.”
