Sally Dynevor, known for her role as Sally Metcalfe in Coronation Street, has received an outpouring of support as she used her platform to deliver a vital message about breast cancer awareness. The actress, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2009, shared her personal experience of encouraging women to attend their NHS breast screening appointments, a message close to her heart after her battle with the disease.
At the time of her diagnosis, Sally was filming poignant scenes for the ITV soap in which her character, Sally Metcalfe, also received a breast cancer diagnosis. This storyline, combined with her own experience, prompted Sally to seek a breast check after discovering a small lump that felt like a grain of rice. Initially, she thought her doctor was confusing her with her on-screen character, but the news was confirmed, and she received the diagnosis on the same day she filmed a scene in which Sally Metcalfe shares the news with her on-screen husband, reported by the Manchester Evening News.
Sally has since become a dedicated advocate for breast cancer awareness and is a patron of the charity Prevent Breast Cancer, which focuses on the prediction, prevention, and funding of groundbreaking research to help prevent the disease in future generations.
In a heartfelt video posted on Instagram, Sally encouraged women to attend their NHS breast screening appointments when invited. “To all women invited for an NHS breast screening, I’m Sally Dynevor, an actor and a breast cancer survivor. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that life can change in an instant,” she shared. She went on to explain how her breast cancer was discovered early, giving her the best chance for survival. “I was lucky, my cancer was found early which gave me the best chance for survival and I’m here, 15 years later because it was diagnosed and treated quickly.”
Sally emphasized the importance of attending breast screening appointments, highlighting that mammograms can detect issues that aren’t yet physically noticeable. “A mammogram is a few minutes out of your life and could make all the difference. Please, please go for your breast screening. Talk to your friends, remind your loved ones, and let’s look out for one another,” she urged.
The post was met with an outpouring of support from her Coronation Street co-stars and fans alike. Co-star Cait Fitton commented, “So much love beautiful lady,” while Sally Carman-Duttine added, “Love you, Sal.” Former co-star Debbie Rush praised Sally, saying, “You are the most beautiful person inside out. Thank you always for sharing your story and being the inspiration you are.”
Sally’s message has resonated deeply with many, with one survivor sharing, “A mammogram is so quick and can save your life. Men and women, go get the screening.” Sally’s continued efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer are an inspiring reminder of the power of early detection.
