Sally Dynevor auditioned for two other Corrie roles but wasn't posh enough

Dancing on Ice's Sally Dynevor auditioned for two other Corrie roles before she became her iconic character.

The actress is best known to the British public as much-loved Sally Metcalfe on the ITV soap, but it turns out she could have played a very different part.

Sally had previously auditioned twice for two different characters - the first was the daughter of milkman Harry Clayton and the second, a girlfriend of Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell).

However, she got neither of the first two roles she went for - and the reason was something she could not change.

While it's unknown why she was turned down to be the milkman's eldest daughter, we do know she didn't get the part as the girlfriend because she wasn't posh enough.

Instead, she became Sally Metcalfe. In 1986, she made her debut when Kevin drove through a puddle and left her soaked.

"Right from day one, we got on really well," Sally said in 2012.

"And we had lots of lovely scenes with Jean Alexander, who played Hilda Ogden. She was a great inspiration when I first started and Sally and Kevin moved in with her at number 13. We had a really good time."

But this wasn't the first time the pair had crossed paths.

Michael made quite the impression when he and Sally first met – far before they started working together on the set of Corrie.

"We worked together at Oldham Theatre Workshop when I was 14 and a half and he was 13," Sally revealed.

"He was the cutest little boy you've ever seen. He was only little and had the longest and blackest eyelashes.

"We did a football play called Zigger Zagger and had a great time. I remember he said, 'Can I come with you to the after-the-play party?' And I said, 'No, you can not! You’re 13, I’m 14 and a half. No way!'

"He was far too young for me"

Before she landed her big break in Corrie, she starred in The Metal Mickey Road Show and Juliet Bravo, in which she played a heroin addict.

And now she's one of 12 contestants on Dancing On Ice.

Sally admitted she is keen to show another side of herself to fans, rather than just what they see on the cobbles while competing in the celebrity ice skating competition on ITV.

She said: "I really do want people to get to know me because they've only known my character for so long. But again, it's putting myself out there that's quite out there, because I've never really done this before.

"I've hidden behind my character. So to come out after all these years, it's quite daunting. But I'm hoping I'll be ok and it'll go well and that I'll really enjoy the experience and then go back to being Sally Metcalfe in a few weeks."

Sally credits her husband Tim Dyenvor and their children for giving her the courage to step out of her comfort zone.

* Dancing on Ice continues on Sunday at 6pm on ITV
