Saints won't pressure playmaker for AFL contract call

St Kilda defender Jack Sinclair's close-checking skills won't extend to keeping an eye on out-of-contract playmaker Nasaiah Wanganeen-Milera during their Adelaide stay.

Glenelg product Wanganeen-Milera has attracted strong interest from both South Australian clubs, who are keen on luring the 22-year-old back to his home state.

Saints coach Ross Lyon put Wanganeen-Milera's looming contract call under a spotlight when he said he would be "disappointed" if rival clubs didn't try to meet with him.

The opportunity has presented for Adelaide and Port Adelaide, with the Saints spending more than a week in the SA capital while playing back-to-back games there in rounds four and five.

But Sinclair hopes St Kilda's strong form - three straight wins and a 3-1 record this season - will sway his halfback-line partner's decision.

"I don't want to put too much pressure on him," Sinclair said on Wednesday.

"To be honest, if we keep playing good footy and winning that stuff sort of takes care of itself.

"He's a big family man, of course, so I'm sure he's weighing up a lot.

"But he and I have an amazing relationship on-field and off-field so I hope he stays.

"He's an amazing player and has really improved so much over his first few years (at the club)."

Wanganeen-Milera has become a star during 67 games across four seasons with St Kilda and is a central figure in their attempt to extend their winning streak during Gather Round.

The Saints take on GWS (3-1) at Norwood Oval on Sunday, with captain Jack Steele a chance to return from two weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury.

"He was moving well today and it's a bit of a week by week test for him at the minute," Sinclair said.

"He was pretty hopeful last week but didn't quite get there.

"I guess the pleasing thing is we've had guys come in and be able to step up regardless of who's been playing."

Sinclair expects St Kilda will take a cautious approach with Max King after the spearhead's latest setback with his troublesome knee.

King hasn't featured since round 16 last year due to ongoing knee issues and his return date remains unclear.

"It's really disappointing for him," Sinclair said.

"I'm not sure how long that sets him back but we know he's a pro, he's dealt with a lot before and unfortunately there's only one way to attack any injury.

"You crack into rehab and hopefully he'll be back as soon as possible.

"We just want him healthy. We don't want to rush him back and for something else to happen again."
