Saints to sign former Raiders first-round safety Johnathan Abram

The New Orleans Saints plan to sign veteran safety Johnathan Abram after a physical on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Abram has spent four years in the league across three different teams after being drafted in 2019 by the then-Oakland Raiders. He battled multiple shoulder injuries throughout his stay before getting waived in Nov. 2022.

Two days after he was signed by the Green Bay Packers, who he played with for two games before getting waived again. Abram was then picked up by the Seattle Seahawks at the end of November, where he would finish the season out. They didn’t re-sign him once his contract expired on March 13 at the start of the new league year.

Abram has 267 career tackles, three interceptions, and eight tackles for a loss. He has been noted to be poor in coverage, and Pro Football Focus graded him at 47.1 in that area for the 2022 season. He looks to be a solid box safety depth option at best while maybe offering some help on special teams. The Saints have brought in other veteran safeties like Ugo Amadi and Lonnie Johnson Jr. this offseason while re-signing J.T. Gray, so he’ll be competing with them and Smoke Monday for a roster spot.
