Saints haven’t re-signed local favorite Clyde Edwards-Helaire

The New Orleans Saints offseason has kicked off to an extent, with the head coaching search in full effect and some of the procedural roster dealings starting up. One of the first things the Saints handled was handing out reserve/futures deals, in which they gave nine players contracts to stick around for an opportunity at training camp this summer. However, one of their late-season additions was not given a deal yet, and that was local fan favorite Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Edwards-Helaire was added to the Saints as they were dealing with multiple injuries at the running back position, and he ended up getting two games of playing time. In that span he had 13 rushing attempts for 46 yards (3.5 yards per carry) plus 3 receptions on 5 targets for 24 yards, converting 3 first downs as well combined between the ground and air.

A decent amount of other practice squad players also did not receive deals with the Saints, including Equanimeous St. Brown, Jermaine Jackson, and Tre Herndon. In addition, they also lost Sincere Haynesworth to the Arizona Cardinals, who signed him to a reserve/futures deal.

Ultimately the Saints and Edwards-Helaire’s camp could just be waiting it out to see if he will get a call from a playoff team for depth, or in the event of an injury. Or he may just not have been in the plans for 2025, and the Saints will look elsewhere. The other issue is without a head coach at the moment, it could be a matter of wait and see until someone takes over and can start building the roster again. Regardless, the homecoming was a nice way to end the season, and hopefully we see him back at some point in the near future.
