Saints ‘closing in’ on free agent contract with Derek Carr

The New Orleans Saints are about to lock up their new starting quarterback. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning that the Saints are “closing in” on a free agent deal with the former Las Vegas Raiders starter, and an agreement could be reached as soon as this afternoon, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The expectation from all sides is that it will get done.

Carr, who turns 32 on March 28, led the Raiders to a 63-79 record in nine years and was selected for four Pro Bowls. But he only made a single postseason appearance in 2021, throwing an interception and taking 3 sacks for a loss of 28 yards in a loss to the eventual Super Bowl runner-up Cincinnati Bengals.

Now he’ll be reunited with the coach that drafted him. He and Dennis Allen are hoping to make a playoff run in New Orleans off the strength of a stout defense and a more-efficient offense with Carr under center. We’ll see how it works out for them.
