Saint Peter’s University is making a return to the NCAA Tournament, but this year's Peacocks team looks vastly different from the one that captured the nation's attention two years ago. In 2020, as a No. 15 seed, Saint Peter’s surprised everyone by advancing to the Elite Eight with notable victories over Kentucky, Murray State, and Purdue. However, following that remarkable run, the team experienced a significant overhaul.
Head coach Shaheen Holloway departed for Seton Hall, and seven key players, including standouts Doug Edert, Daryl Banks, and KC Ndefo, transferred to other schools. Only Latrell Reid remains from that memorable squad, although he did not participate in any of the tournament wins. Reid acknowledges the challenge of transitioning to a new team dynamic, emphasizing that it's a fresh start for Saint Peter’s.
Despite the changes, Saint Peter's secured a No. 15 seed this year after clinching the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title. The Peacocks (19-13) are set to face second-seeded Tennessee in the opening round in Charlotte.
Reflecting on the team's transformation, Reid expressed the difficulty of seeing his former teammates depart, especially after he had recently transferred back to his hometown. The bond they shared made it tough to adjust to a new roster, particularly during the lingering effects of COVID-19 restrictions.
While the team composition has evolved, Reid maintains that the spirit of Saint Peter’s remains intact under second-year coach Bashir Mason. Known for their stout defense, the Peacocks rank 12th in the nation in scoring defense, showcasing their commitment to their playing style.
Reid is optimistic about the team's potential, believing they have the capability to compete at a high level once again. He credits the coaching staff for instilling a winning culture within the team and is confident in their ability to deliver on the court.
Looking ahead, Reid acknowledges that this time around, Saint Peter’s won't catch anyone off guard. Despite the changes and challenges, the Peacocks are poised to make their mark in the tournament once more.
