Newcastle United made it five wins on the spin with a brave 2-1 win away to Brentford on Saturday afternoon. However, the Magpies didn't make life easy for themselves after a shocking opening 45 minutes at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Eddie Howe's men could easily have been three or four goals behind at the interval after Ivan Toney had a goal disallowed and then missed a penalty as the home side poured on the pressure early on. Toney made amends from the spot when given a second chance shortly before half-time, leaving Newcastle with a task on their hands in the second period.
Two bold half-time substitutes changed the game before Joelinton and Alexander Isak found the net to ensure the turnaround mission was a success. Here are the moments you may have missed from the Premier League victory.
Maxi message
Moments before kick-off it emerged Allan Saint-Maximin would not be involved in the capital due to a minor hamstring problem. The winger has found form recently but now has to deal with another spell on the sidelines.
Shortly before his team-mates kicked off at Brentford, Maxi took to social media to send a message to Newcastle fans. Posting a photo of himself in some form of recovery chamber, the wide man said: "I'll be back soon."
Unfortunately not soon enough with Howe all-but confirming the attacker would be missing for next weekend's clash with Aston Villa.
Howe's Gordon talk
Newcastle's half-time substitute Anthony Gordon was brought off with a few moments remaining down south, angering the winger somewhat. The £40m man wasn't pleased as he eventually took his place back on the bench after being replaced by Matt Ritchie with seconds to go.
Howe tried to calm Gordon down on the touchline to no avail but had another go after Newcastle's players clapped the travelling support at full-time. Throwing an arm around Gordon, the Toon boss spoke with his January addition about his reasoning for the late substitution.
Howe was asked about the situation at full-time. “I’ve got no problem. Anthony is passionate boy. He wants to do well, but there was seconds left on the clock and we wanted to get Matty on because Anthony was holding his ankle," he said.
"He just needs to control his emotions in that moment, but there are no problems."
Toney panicked
Ivan Toney saw his deadlock-breaking goal ruled out after a lengthy VAR check in the opening stages, with Newcastle breathing an early sigh of relief. But the former Magpies striker soon had another chance to open the scoring after Sven Botman fouled Kevin Schade in the penalty area.
Toney had scored his previous 22 efforts from 12 yards but was denied by Nick Pope, again sending the away support wild. However when Alexander Isak caught Rico Henry inside Newcastle's penalty area later in the half, the attacker made no mistake as he put his second spot-kick in the same corner as his first attempt.
However, there was a brief moment of panic for Toney as the TV screen inside Brentford's stadium momentarily brought up the VAR infographic during the home team's celebrations. Toney thought he was going to see yet another effort to open the scoring denied but luckily for the attacker it was a simple technology malfunction.
