Sainsbury’s to hire 18,000 workers to tackle Christmas shopping rush

Sainsbury’s is hiring 18,000 temporary staff to help cover the busy Christmas period.

The supermarket is taking on 15,000 workers, with another 2,000 at Argos, which it owns.

The new temp staff will help out in stores, serve customers, stack shelves and pack for delivery.

Sainsbury's is also taking on another 1,000 staff in its logistics arm.

These staff will work in warehouses and make sure deliveries arrive at stores across the UK.

Sainsbury’s group HR director Angie Risley said: “We are really excited to be able to welcome an additional 18,000 colleagues to our team to ensure we deliver the best possible service to our customers this Christmas."

The temp staff will be employed for between three and 12 weeks, with contracts ending on January 7, 2023.

But Sainsbury's is not the only supermarket staffing up to handle the Christmas rush.

Tesco plans to hire thousands of temp staff for the Christmas rush.

Last month Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy said the supermarket wants to hire 12,500 workers over the festive period.

Aldi is to hire around 3,000 new workers ahead of the busy Christmas season.

The jobs on offer include over 2,000 temporary and permanent store positions, to help replenish stock and provide assistance to customers.

Aldi also said it will soon be hiring for 6,000 more jobs - and not just for Christmas.

It is also hiring 100 area managers for its stores - and the roles pay up to £81,000.

People taking part get a year of training.

After that they'll have all the skills they need to run all Aldi branches in an area.

Salaries start from £44,000 for successful applicants in the first year, with permanent contracts offered after that point.

Pay rises to more than £81,000 by the fifth year.

Tesco said there may be opportunities for Christmas workers to apply for any permanent roles that are available.

The seasonal jobs are now listed on the Tesco careers website.

Boots wants to hire more than 10,000 workers across the UK to cope with the expected Christmas shopping boom.

The health and beauty store will recruit staff in its stores, warehouses and back offices.

Boots wants more than 6,500 customer assistant roles and up to 3,000 staff at its Beeston and Burton-on-Trent distribution centres.

The firm will also hire 2,000 customer operations assistants - who will package home deliveries and help out in stores.

Boots is hiring part-time and full-time workers.
