Sainsbury's shoppers now threatening 'boycott' over 'astronomical' price of cake

Earlier this month, Sainsbury's found itself in hot water with shoppers over the price of fish fingers. Shoppers said they were 'falling to their knees' over the £7 charge for a pack of 30 Captain Birdseye fish fingers.

Now Sainsbury's has found itself hitting the headlines again, after a shopper discovered how much Mr Kipling cakes now cost. The price for a pack of 8 cakes? £3.75.

Posting on the Scrimping on a Budget Facebook page, a shopper called Carol Bishop wrote: "I'm sure some supermarkets are over pricing branded goods, so customers choose own brands instead. These used to be £1.50." The comment section was quickly flooded with comments, with many commenting on the 'appalling' price of the tea time treat.

When Manchester Evening News shared the news of the price increase, readers didn't hold back. Many people couldn't justify paying £3.45 for a pack of cakes, while others said they'd rather make their own at home.

Here's what you lot had to say:

Sam Johnson said: "The way people should treat this is just don’t buy over priced items, they will be forced to drop prices if we all stop spending money." Gwen Walford said: "Leave them on the shelves, stop buying them, they'll soon get the message. Make your own cakes & traybakes they're so much nicer, & get more portions from one tray bake."

Paul Berrisford wrote: "The world as gone crazy. Cannot remember last time I brought a Kipling cake. If folk are daft enough to pay them prices they will carry on selling them. Like HP food now ,don’t bye them anymore, silly prices."

Teresa McNeil said: "Exceedingly good cakes. Just don't buy them." Bonnie Nasser said: "Prices are getting beyond how can they justify these prices ludicrous."

Sue House suggested: "Make your own cakes." Alison Wilkes added: "Just won’t be buying them. Still can’t get my head around all the price rises on everything. Greed springs to mind. I can do without cake."

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury's said: "While prices can go up and down for a range of reasons, we’re committed to offering our customers great choice and value whenever they shop with us.

"We have a range of Mr Kipling cakes available in our stores and many of them are on offer. Currently, Mr Kipling Mini Battenberg Cakes x5 are £1.15 and Mr Kipling Chocolate Cake Slices x8 are £2.”

A Mr Kipling spokesperson said: "The retail price of our products are at the discretion of the respective retailer." Sainsbury's are not the only supermarket to be selling the cakes at higher prices, as Morrisons are selling the same packet at £3.45, while Tesco is selling them at £2.85, or currently £2 with Clubcard. Asda has them for £2 a pack without any promotion.
