Sainsbury's shoppers have once again been left outraged after a packet of cakes from a popular brand has fallen victim to the recent price increases.
Shoppers have had to battle a range of rising prices at the supermarket lately, with major brands such as Lurpak and Birds Eye sparking furore for their increased costs amidst the rising cost of living. And now Mr Kipling fans have found themselves paying that bit more after one shopper spotted a pack of eight Chocolate Slices from the iconic brand on sale for a whopping £3.45, reports The Manchester Evening News.
The shopper sparked the outrage after she shared a snap of the cakes on social media in a post that read: "I'm sure some supermarkets are over pricing branded goods, so customers choose own brands instead.
"These used to be £1.50."
Other shoppers were quick to flock to the comments section to slam the supermarket's "crazy" prices and the recent price hikes that they have found.
"How can they think selling these cakes is normal at that price. Crazy," said one. "People need to stop buying any extras - cakes, sweets chocolates for a year - and see what happens. There is no need for these items to be so highly priced."
"They can keep 'em at that price," said another. "Rather make my own." The woman behind the original post explained why she decided to take the picture.
The shopper who originally spotted the price increase said that she only took the photo to show her daughter why she would not be purchasing them for their picnic.
She added: "I think Mr Kipling would be turning in his grave at these prices."
Sainsbury's has since responded to the post where they explained that the £1.50 price referred to was a promotional price, with the £3.45 'the base price' for the product. The supermarket chain has since put the packet of cakes on offer for £2, alongside other popular Mr Kipling treats, such as the Angel Cakes and Lemon Slices.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury's said: "While prices can go up and down for a range of reasons, we’re committed to offering our customers great choice and value whenever they shop with us.
"We have a range of Mr Kipling cakes available in our stores and many of them are on offer. Currently, Mr Kipling Mini Battenberg Cakes x5 are £1.15 and Mr Kipling Chocolate Cake Slices x8 are £2.”
A Mr Kipling spokesperson said: "The retail price of our products are at the discretion of the respective retailer."
Sainsbury's are not the only supermarket to be selling the cakes at higher prices, as Morrisons are selling the same packet at £3.45, while Tesco is selling them at £2.85, or currently £2 with Clubcard. Asda has them for £2 a pack without any promotion.
