Sainsbury's Nectar card points are changing - and it can make a big difference

Sainsbury’s has shaken up its Nectar loyalty scheme so shoppers can now donate their points to a chosen charity.

The supermarket has confirmed the launch of a new Nectar Donate option which will work with good causes such as Alzheimer’s Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Each donated Nectar point will be converted into funding for your chosen organisation without any fees attached.

The minimum donation value is 200 points, equivalent to £1.

This is the same value as what Nectar points are worth if you were to spend them in stores at Sainsbury's.

You get one Nectar point for every £1 spent, with one Nectar point worth 0.5p in return.

The Nectar scheme was launched in 2002 (Daily Mirror)

This means if you earn one point from a purchase it's the equivalent of 0.5% cashback.

Nectar Donate is provided in partnership with Crowdfunder and is available to use any time on the Nectar digital app.

All customers will need to do is create an account with Crowdfunder, link their Nectar account and they will then be able to donate to their chosen cause from those charities available.

Nectar head of loyalty and CRM Alex Naisby said: “We’re proud to have teamed up with Crowdfunder to launch Nectar Donate, a new and simple way for customers to support the charities and causes they really care about with their Nectar points.

“Our customers have always been extremely generous whenever we have run charity donation campaigns in the past and we know many of them are interested in supporting local charities.

“So, whether it’s donating those forgotten points or a bank of saved-up points, we’re making it even easier for customers to turn their Nectar points into positivity.”

Simon Deverell, founder and creative Director at Crowdfunder said: "Nectar Donate gives charities the opportunity to benefit from Nectar customers donating their points to good causes.

"At a time when charities have suffered massively due to the pandemic and donors have felt the pinch, this amazing partnership creates an entirely new way for people to give to, and fundraise for, the causes they care about."

Sainsbury's left shoppers furious last year after it cancelled its Nectar Double Up promotion.

Double Up does exactly as the name suggests. It allows customers to exchange Nectar points for vouchers that are worth twice their face value.

The vouchers can be used to spend in Sainsbury's stores but only on certain products such as clothing, homeware and electricals.

The Double Up promotion took place in October and November in 2020, but Sainsbury's has confirmed the event had been scrapped in 2021.
