Sainsbury's has introduced a new rule in some of its stores which many shoppers aren't happy about.
In some cases, you'll need to scan your receipt at the self-checkouts before you can leave as a way to provide proof of purchase. Shoppers won't be able to leave until they do this, which has sparked fury on social media.
Many people are frustrated at this new rule, saying they "never" get receipts when they pay for their shopping via self-checkout. Some have even said they'll now be boycotting the supermarket as a form of protest.
The Mirror reports that angry Sainsbury's shoppers have been complaining about the rule change on Twitter.
One user said: "I'd be buggered. I've never once hit the "receipt" button on the self-service till."
Another added: "Essentially they are holding [people] hostage against their will as they refuse to let people leave without scanning a receipt that not everyone chooses to get in the first place. What will they do? Hold someone hostage and rifle through bags before releasing you?"
One shopper described the move as an "appalling way to treat customers", while another agreed, saying: "I’ve been loyal to Sainsbury’s for 30 years. Now it stops.
"How dare you insult me, by scanning receipts to leave.
"Not even the discounters to this. No warning, no instore signage and it doesnt work, my receipt had to be reprinted.
"Farewell you untrusting store."
Sainbury's has told the Mirror that the move is "not a new security measure and features in a small number of our stores at the self-service checkout areas."
It's not the first store to crack down on its security procedures recently.
At Primark, certain stores have introduced a self-checkout function that requires customers to scan their receipts before leaving with their shopping.
And at Ikea and Costco, shoppers must be able to provide proof of purchase before being able to exit the store.
