Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl and Tesco cut price of bread and butter in cost of living boost

Sainsbury's, Aldi, Tesco and Lidl have all cut the price of some butter and bread products- just weeks after slashing the price of milk.

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's was first to reveal the price change and reduced its own-brand 250g packets of butter by 10p from £1.99 to £1.89.

The biggest price cut is on the larger 500g packs of salted butter, which are being slashed by 20p from £3.95 to £3.75.

Sainsbury’s has also cut the price of several 800g loaves of bread by 10p, down from 85p to 75p, and some 400g loaves from 75p to 65p.

Aldi,Tesco and Lidl then followed suit with identical price cuts - you can see the full list of reductions below.

Sainsbury's said its price drop comes as wholesale prices fall, with supermarkets being criticised for not passing on cuts quickly enough.

The move will not have an impact on how much it pays farmers.

Tesco kicked off a price war last month after it reduced the price of its milk, with Sainsbury’s, Asda, Lidl and Aldi all following suit.

Two pints were cut from £1.30 to £1.25 and one pint from 95p to 90p. The largest six-pint bottle has been slashed from £2.35 to £2.30.

Food price inflation was at its fastest pace for 45 years in March, coming in at 19.1%, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Rhian Bartlett, Food Commercial Director at Sainsbury’s, said: “We know that our customers are always looking for help with the cost of living which is why we are constantly considering ways to keep prices low.

“We have been battling hard to beat inflation and whenever we are paying less for the products we buy from our suppliers, we will pass those savings on to customers.

“As we see the commodity prices starting to fall for wheat and butter, we’re able to lower our prices on two of the products people buy most often, bread and butter.”
