Sainsbury’s has started construction work on the site of its new flagship supermarket at Talbot Green. The supermarket store plans to bring 150 permanent new retail jobs to the area, as well as temporarily support jobs during construction.
It comes after plans for the site - east of Cowbridge Road near the A473 - were approved for a new supermarket, hotel and cinema, among other amenities, 12 years ago. The plans were approved in 2013 and 2014, and a new roundabout was even built to handle the expected traffic to the site, but until this year the land remained empty.
However, after years of waiting for the development of the site, work for a 50,000 square feet Sainsbury’s store has begun and is hoped to be open in spring 2024.

Sainsbury's resubmitted its plans which were granted in 2018 and then altered in 2022. The new store is expected to have a food and clothing section and sell items from its homeware brand.
There will also be an Argos store inside the supermarket, which will sell technology, home and toy products, and have more than 500 parking spaces on site. A proportion of these will be disabled parking spaces and parent and child spaces, along with electric vehicle charging points. There will also be a Sainsbury’s pay-at-pump petrol filling station on site.
Sainsbury’s property director, Patrick Dunne, said: “We were delighted to kick off our longstanding plans to build a new Sainsbury’s supermarket for Talbot Green and to celebrate the start of construction on site with representatives from across the local community. We’ll be keeping everyone updated as the project progresses and we look forward to welcoming our new colleagues and customers next year."
Alex Davies Jones MP, Member of Parliament for Pontypridd said: “It was great visiting what will soon become a new Sainsbury’s for Talbot Green, which represents a really exciting investment for the town and wider community. I was particularly pleased to hear about how Sainsbury’s is investing in this flagship retail provision and new jobs, as well as how they will be ramping up support for local charity and community initiatives closer to the store opening. I look forward to continuing to work with Sainsbury’s while the supermarket is built and once it opens next year.
Sainsbury’s Talbot Green will work with local food donation partners, via Neighbourly, to help ensure that any surplus food from the store goes to those in the community who need it most. To get the latest RCT news straight to your inbox, subscribe to our dedicated newsletter here.
