Sainsbury's and Asda issue 'do not eat' warning on brown rolls – are there any in your cupboard?

A packing error has been blamed for a brown roll range containing the wrong product - (PA Archive)

Asda and Sainsbury’s have issued an urgent food recall, advising customers to avoid eating a type of brown bread roll.

The supermarkets have warned people with a soya allergy not to consume the McGhee's Family Bakers Brown Rolls. Food Standards Scotland (FSS) also alerted to the recall notice.

Customers are being advised to return the rolls to stores immediately as the brown rolls could pose a serious health risk.

A packing error has been blamed for the brown rolls being put in packaging for white rolls.

Sainsbury's confirmed the item has been recalled "due to a packing error of White Morning Rolls which contain soya, being packed into Brown Rolls packaging which does not identify this allergen as an intentional ingredient but as ‘may contain’."

It added it has “been made aware that McGhee’s Family Bakers are recalling the above product".

Sainsbury’s added: “This poses a health risk to those allergic to Soya. If you have a Soya allergy, please do not consume this product and instead return it to any Sainsbury’s store for a refund.”

The rolls are also stocked in Asda, which has issued a similar warning.

In Scotland, the FSS said: "This product may contain soya making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya. If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to soya do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. No other McGhee’s Family Bakers products are known to be affected."

Customers with enquiries can contact McGhee’s Family Bakers by emailing technical@mcgheesbakery.co.uk or writing to: McGhee Family Bakers, 10 Keppochhill Drive, Glasgow, G21 1HX.
