'Sail away together' - Kevin Campbell hits out at Rafa Benitez and Ronald Koeman after Everton claims

Kevin Campbell has criticised Ronald Koeman for his recent claims regarding guiding Everton to their best finish 'in the last 15 years'.

The Dutchman was speaking to Sky Sports as part of an interview reflecting on his Goodison Park tenure, during which he admitted it was difficult to attract top players to the club due to competition from other top sides in the Premier League.

Koeman guided the Blues to seventh place during his only full campaign in charge, though mistakenly claimed he secured sixth position and the club's strongest league finish in over a decade as he claimed it to be. This was of course achieved by Roberto Martinez during the 2013/14 season as Everton narrowly missed out on Champions League football in fifth.

Campbell also took aim at Rafa Benitez, who also spoke to Sky Sports of his struggles during his short spell as Everton manager but first addressed Koeman's remarks over outdoing those who had come before him regarding domestic success.

“No they didn’t. That’s not the truth. It’s not true, no," he told Goodison News.

“You see, these guys are quick to pat themselves on the back. What they need to do, they need to get the facts right. It wasn’t Everton’s best finish for 50 years. What’s he talking about?! David Moyes finished in the Champions League spot!

“So again, put him and Benitez on a gondola and get them into Venice and they can sail away together. Because they’ve had the good times at other clubs. Ronald Koeman, he did alright but it wasn’t great. And behind the scenes he wasn’t liked as well. So there you go.”
