SAG Awards red carpet: Stars bust out big sleeves, glamour suits and floor-length gowns to serve up dramatic looks

The Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony was not the first event on the awards season calendar, but with no red carpet at last month's Golden Globes this was our first taste of glamour for the year.

Thankfully, the celebrities who rocked up to the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica made sure they brought the glamour we've been craving.

With dramatic gowns, statement sleeves and a whole lot of colour, there was plenty to look at before the winners were announced.

Here are some of the best trends we saw on the night:

Bold-bottomed gowns

Will Smith keeps it simple, while Jada Pinkett Smith's voluminous skirt, extra-long sleeves and silver necklace do all the talking.  (AP: Jordan Struass)
Saniyya Sidney's swirly dress gives off Disney princess vibes. (AP: Jordan Strauss)
Kerry Washington's yellow number deserves every inch of floor space it takes up. (AP: Jordan Struass)

Sleeves with something to say

We're deeming Jihae's massive ruffled sleeve an essential addition to this metallic gown. (AP: Jordan Strauss)
Fran Drescher looks very elegant in this black gown, with the floor-length sleeves and shoulder detailing harking back to the fantastical outfit choices from her days as Fran Fine. (AP: Jordan Struass)

Over-the-top (but very necessary) details

Black is a safe colour for the red carpet, but the stones along that plunging neckline make Cate Blanchett's choice far from boring.  (AP: Jordan Strauss)
Jean Smart's dress would have been fine without all those ruffles, but now that we're seeing them we cannot imagine a world without them.  (AP: Jordan Strauss)
Cynthia Erivo's red gown is a stunner, and the nail colour coordination takes her look to another level. (AP: Jordan Strauss)

Preppy - but not too preppy

Nicole Kidman's dress looks a bit like something Wednesday Adams would wear … if she was a glamorous actress.  (AP: Jordan Struass)
The baby pink and headband add a girlish flair, but the neckline, the sleeves and Helen Mirren's general stateliness make this an elegant choice.   (AP: Jordan Strauss)

Old Hollywood glamour

Corporate glam

Some suits can be dull, but this fabric choice makes Jessica Chastain's sparkly suit something to pay attention to.  (AP: Jordan Strauss)
With those shoulder pads, the top of Caitriona Balfe's dress looks like a blazer, but the bottom looks better suited to a red carpet than a boardroom.  (AP: Jordan Strauss)
Carl Clemons-Hopkins's gown takes some of the best elements of a classic red carpet suit to produce this dramatic number.  (AP: Jordan Strauss)
Elle Fanning takes a soft yet glamorous approach to a classic tuxe with her blush shirt and shiny trousers.  (AP: Jordan Strauss)
Alright, so technically this isn't on the red carpet, but Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino referencing their iconic outfits in Romy and Michele's High School Reunion cannot be ignored.  (AP: Chris Pizzello)
