Safety notices on graves at Lanarkshire cemetery slammed by grieving family

South Lanarkshire Council have begun safety checks at East Kilbride Cemetery this month - but the latest works have again come under criticism.

The local authority were previously criticised by grieving families after wooden stakes and safety notices were placed on headstones at Philipshill Cemetery in the town.

They were accused of "desecrating graves'" and the stakes and safety notices were deemed an "eyesore".

SLC say the works are part of an ongoing programme of safety checks across all 55 cemeteries under its care - however, families are again unhappy at the manner of the work carried out.

One family posted on social media: "The bereavement department has deemed it necessary to install fencing posts and safety notices with regards to headstone conditions.

"I agree that a few are in need of repair but there are many at the entrance that have been desecrated and in good repair and well looked after, the work carried out without prior notice or consultation of family members.

"I am in the process of raising a complaint with regards to this and looking for anyone else that has been effected by this."

Kevin Carr, head of facilities, waste and grounds services, told Lanarkshire Live that inspections of headstones at the cemetery started earlier this month.

He added: “Our fully trained teams are checking each headstone, and where any is found to be unsafe, lair owners are contacted in writing and a sign is attached to the headstone advising that there is an issue with its stability.

“However, where we do not hold details of ownership, or in cases where the owner does not respond, we will lay the headstone flat or ‘trench in’ the headstone to ensure safety.

“As direct contact is purely with the named owner of the lair, there may be times when wider family will visit the cemetery without full knowledge of the process, and we regret any distress this might cause.

“Information about the programme is posted on the notice boards at the entrance to each cemetery, and local councillors are being kept up to date with the programme.

“A summary of the headstone inspection programme, including contact details for the team can be found on the Bereavement Services page of the council website.”
