A town has been saddened after plans came to light for a chippy that was once "really popular" to be converted into housing. If the new proposal for the Humber Road Chippy on Humber Road, Beeston is approved and implemented, the shop would be converted into a house in multiple occupation (HMO).
A house in multiple occupation (HMO) is a property rented out by at least three people who are not from one 'household' but share facilities like the bathroom and kitchen. When contacted by Nottinghamshire Live the manager of the Humber Road Chippy declined to comment on what the plans meant for the future of the business.
Locals were saddened by the possibility of the chippy being turned into a HMO, with one suggesting it had seen a fall in customers. Jane Meyers, 45, who lives in Beeston said: "That's really sad. It's kind of the first thing you notice when you get off the tram. It used to be really popular back in the day but I don't think a lot of people come here often now."

Martha Parker, 68, who lives on the same street said: "Oh not the chippy shop, it's been there for a long time, I used to go there when I was young. Haven't been there for a while but I'm sad to see it go."
Nottinghamshire Live previously heard from chippy runners who said pressure was growing on businesses due to rising costs. Everything from the cost of packaging to peas, flour and fish has rocketed - with a sunflower oil shortage adding to problems for chip shops.
Cameron Riddoch, 24, added: "I haven't been there much but my nana lives around the corner and she loves it. She'll be sad to hear this. It was an award winning chippy and it was a place for the community to come together."
Misiura Edwards, 66, who lives in Chilwell said: "The issue is that there's not enough social housing here. A lot of people who live here like me, who need to retire, don't have a place to live because all the council wants to do is give the properties away to students and make profits."
Nottinghamshire Live attempted to contact applicant Jack Nijjar. The application is currently pending consideration by Broxtowe Borough Council.
