A despicable thug has been caged for 18 years after breaking into a woman's home before raping her and beating her unconscious.
Brian Brough, went to his 60-year-old victim's home and tricked his way into her house by asking to use her bathroom, at around 9pm on March 19 last year.
The 35-year-old pretended to be a relative of her next door neighbour and when she let him in to use her toilet. Twisted Brough, came into the woman's home, hung up his jacket before going to the bathroom.
After he had finished he followed the woman into her living room and sat beside her on the couch before putting his arm around her, a courtroom heard.
Brough told her he was a male escort and asked whether she wanted to pay for sex with him, prosecutor Mark Kellet revealed at Minshull Street Crown Court.
The woman, from Little Hulton, declined before he exposed himself and forced her to perform oral sex on him, report Manchester Evening News.
She tried to fight him off but he struck her to the face and dragged her to the bedroom by her hair. He then raped her and attempted to rape her anally, the court heard.
“During the ordeal, he repeatedly beat her, knocking her unconscious and fracturing her eye socket, nose and jaw,” Mr Kellet said. Bruising and abrasion were discovered during an intimate examination, as was Brough’s DNA.
“Having raped and beaten [the victim], leaving her battered and unconscious, he stole her phones, tobacco, chocolates and alcohol before leaving,” the prosecutor said. Brough was arrested on March 25 and claimed he couldn’t recall the incident.
Following a trial in November last year, Brough was convicted unanimously by a jury of section 18 grievous bodily harm, rape, attempted rape and burglary. Brough had refused to attend his trial, and was not represented.
In today’s sentence hearing (March 23), when asked by Judge John Edwards if he wanted to say anything to the court, Brough shrugged his shoulders.
Finding him to be a dangerous offender under sentencing provisions, Judge Edwards told him: “This was an extremely violent and remorseless rape. You had invited yourself into the home of a vulnerable 60-year-old woman and raped her.
“The injuries she sustained were extremely serious, including multiple bruising and fractured bones in what would have been, on any level, a horrific ordeal. There is no doubt you pose a significant risk of serious harm to the public.”
Judge Edwards went on to express his hope and desire that the victim is able to move forward, knowing Brough would not likely be released in her lifetime.
Brough, of no fixed abode, was jailed for 18 years with an extended licence period of four years. He will serve two thirds of his sentence in prison before being considered for release by the parole board. He must also sign onto the Sex Offender’s Register for life
Detective Constable Leanne Jackson of GMP’s Salford district, said: “This was a horrific and sustained physical and sexual assault on a vulnerable woman and no one should ever be made to feel unsafe or at risk in their own home.
“Throughout the interview and the trial Brough would not accept any responsibility for his sadistic and vile actions, forcing his victim to go through the horrendous ordeal in court.
“He did not even have the decency to attend his trial and face up to his actions and instead refused to come out of his prison cell with the trial having to be heard in his absence.
“His lack of remorse perfectly sums up who he is as a human being and thankfully we’ve now been able to remove him from the streets for 22 years and stop him causing any further harm to anymore women.
“I want to thank the woman’s neighbours who quickly alerted police and got her to hospital for the urgent medical treatment she needed. I also want to commend her bravery and strength throughout the investigation and trial as her determination to see this through has ensured we were able to secure a significant conviction today.
“Cases such as this can be distressing for not only those involved but the wider community and I would urge anyone who may have been the victim of sexual assault - or knows someone who has been a victim - to get in touch with police. All reports will be treated seriously and with the sensitivity they deserve and we will ensure you are provided with all available support.”
