London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has voiced strong support for a closer working relationship between the Prime Minister and US President Donald Trump, stressing that cooperation with America’s leader is vital for both London and the wider United Kingdom. Speaking exclusively to MyLondon, the Mayor underscored the importance of the special bond the two nations share, noting that collaboration on common interests can benefit the country as a whole.
This encouragement comes on the back of recent directives from the Labour Government, which urged Sir Sadiq to observe a period of silence when it comes to publicly criticizing President Trump. In recent weeks, the President has maintained that he has a “very good relationship” with the Prime Minister, despite not fully agreeing with his political philosophy. The remarks have ignited debate over whether the benefits of a close transatlantic alliance outweigh ideological differences, reported by My London News.
Addressing these issues during his conversation with MyLondon, Sir Sadiq Khan stated, “The USA are our closest allies. We have always had a special relationship with them. I think one of the things the Prime Minister has got to do is work in the common interest with the President of the USA.” He continued, “There are many areas in which we agree, there are some areas where clearly we will disagree. My job as the Mayor is to stand up for London’s interests, our values.”
The Mayor, known for championing fact-based journalism and advocating for democratic institutions and the rights of minorities, made these comments at the launch of Sadler’s Wells East—a new dance theatre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford. Describing the venue as a “game changer” for dance productions in the capital, Khan highlighted how cultural initiatives are essential in representing and uplifting London’s diverse community. He believes that, alongside cultural investment, pragmatic political engagement with key international allies is necessary for the city’s continued prosperity.
Historically, the relationship between London’s leadership and the US presidency has not always been harmonious. In November last year, Sir Sadiq expressed apprehension about Trump’s re-election, describing it as a “fearful” outlook on democracy. His concerns were further amplified in a recent Observer article, where he characterized the US election result as a “perilous moment,” referring to it as a “specter of resurgent fascism.” Despite these strong words, Khan has indicated that such differences need not preclude productive dialogue.
Later, during an appearance on BBC London, he added that he wished to “work closely” with the American president, while still hoping he would act differently from “the last time he was president.” This nuanced stance demonstrates the Mayor’s commitment to balancing his criticisms with a practical approach to international relations.
As the UK navigates its complex geopolitical landscape, Sir Sadiq Khan’s call for cooperation with President Trump underscores a broader commitment to safeguarding London’s interests and ensuring that the nation’s strategic partnerships remain robust and forward-thinking.
